Coherence Therapy — Introductory Training (Level 1)

Kotor, Montenegro · 9–11 October 2026

2.5-day in-person training ≈ 15 hours Taught in English

Join us in Kotor, Montenegro for a 2.5-day introductory Coherence Therapy weekend designed for psychotherapists, mental health professionals and advanced students in psychotherapy and psychology. Across approximately 15 hours of theory, live demonstrations and structured experiential practice, you will learn how Coherence Therapy leverages memory reconsolidation to produce deep, lasting change in emotional and behavioural patterns.

Working in small groups with rotating roles of therapist, client and observer, you will practise experiential techniques for accessing and transforming implicit emotional constructs, explore the constructivist foundations of the model, and learn to facilitate symptom resolution in a coherent, non-counteractive way.

About the approach

What is Coherence Therapy?

An integrative, experiential approach grounded in constructivist principles and the process of memory reconsolidation — understood as a universal mechanism of transformational change in psychotherapy.

A central pillar of the model is the well-established idea that symptoms are coherent with underlying, implicit, adaptive constructions of reality that require their presence. This means that symptoms such as depression, anxiety or procrastination typically serve adaptive functions related to survival, even though they simultaneously generate suffering for clients.

The founders of Coherence Therapy, Bruce Ecker and Laurel Hulley, observed that the most significant and lasting change occurs when clients directly experience and discover the personal meaning of their symptoms, and then juxtapose these meanings with experiences that contradict them — either uncovered or created within therapy. Through this process emotional schemas are transformed, the symptom loses its necessity, and clients become free from their suffering.

Curriculum

Outcomes

Skills and knowledge you will gain

  • The principle of symptom coherence, including a “not-knowing” (credulous) stance and prioritising experiential over cognitive work
  • Being a coherence therapist in practice: tracking the experience, attunement, and being directive about the process but not the content
  • Applying the universal Therapeutic Reconsolidation Process map as a framework for integration across modalities such as IFS, EMDR, Somatic Experiencing and schema therapy
Knowledge gained
  • Core constructivist epistemology and methodology of Coherence Therapy, applicable to other experiential approaches
